I’m happy to share that a major update to Index Card is now available. Most importantly, you can now stack cards together under a single heading. On the corkboard, stacked cards appear under a single binder clip icon (similar to iOS 4 Folders) that can be expanded into a stack view.

In outline view, a blue heading row identifies the stack beginning and end, with associated cards indented as sub-items in the hierarchy. I think the stack end indicator is pretty innovative, as it allows you to fully utilize iPad gestures to drag cards in and out of stacks when viewing your project as an outline. The other outline implementations I’ve seen on the iPad require you to tap buttons to move items in the hierarchy, or won’t allow sub-items to be dropped in as the last item of a group. This is because other apps can’t tell if an item is meant to be the last row in the heading above or the first row in the heading below.

Also in this release is custom label names so you can define the text associated with each label color, similar to Mac OS X Finder Labels. For example, a you might want the color green to be associated with a label of “Finished scenes”. Define your own default label scheme, or set unique labels on a per project basis.

Notes export allows lets you include text you’ve entered in the notes field of cards when exporting projects. A switch is displayed as part of the project export dialog, making it easy for users to decide whether to include their notes when sharing a project with others.

• Custom label names: Customize the text associated with each label color (e.g. Red is “Protagonist”, Green is “Finished Scenes”).
• Notes Export: Optionally include card notes when exporting your project.
• Notes indicator: Flip to backside of card button is colored blue when text exists in the notes field.
• Notes Text Field Focus: The Notes text field is now ready for typing when you flip a card over. You no longer need to tap the back of the card for the cursor and keyboard to appear.
• Quicker Scrolling: The corkboard now scrolls faster when rearranging cards
• Auto save: Index Card now performs auto save of your projects more frequently
